Much Needed Convention Centre on Cards for Christchurch
Residents of Christchurch are welcoming a proposed convention centre in the city to replace the old one damaged and then demolished following the 2011 earthquakes.
Christchurch has since lost out on the ability to host large-scale groups and there have been calls for a replacement from a number of corners.
It is proposed that the new convention centre, to be built in the central city, will be able to host several events at the same time, starting with space for up to 2,000 people. While still in the concept stage, the centre is planned to include hotel and residential accommodation, food and beverage outlets, retail, office spaces and parking.
Earlier this year the completion date for the centre was pushed back to late 2018 due to costs. Sales and marketing vice-president of Vancouver Convention Centre, Claire Smith, said it was important that Christchurch have a convention centre to help generate extra business tourism spending. She has suggested It could be tied to Canterbury's particularly strong agribusiness expertise.
The general manager of one of the Christchurch's newly opened accommodation venues said his company regarded a convention centre as important. "The sooner it is here, the sooner we can ensure we're part of the promotion of it."
