New China Southern Airlines Flights a Welcome Boost for Christchurch Motel Owners
China Southern Airlines, Asia's largest airline has begun a new service between Guangzhou and Christchurch. In doing so it becomes the first Chinese carrier to fly to the South Island and will provide a welcome boost to visitor numbers for Christchurch motel owners. The first Dreamliner touched down recently, spearheading the way for the direct service which will operate three times a week.
Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Malcolm Johns says Guangzhou has become one of the world's important international airport hubs while the airline and its passengers enjoy a global reach of 1052 international destinations in 177 countries and regions. "I am exceedingly proud of how our team has represented the city and South Island on the international stage to achieve this outcome." Johns said
At the signing ceremony for the launch of the direct service, Prime Minister John Key noted that the direct flights would bring significant benefits to Canterbury residents during the process of reconstruction. The direct flights would facilitate the personal exchanges and economic and trade cooperation between the South Island and China to promote tourism development in the South Island, Key said.
The new direct service offers more than 70,000 seats in its first year alone. This has been estimated at providing a growth in visitor spend of more than $100M across all southern regions. Future prospects are encouraging with the New Zealand Government investing NZ$1.5million in the new route for market development and promotion.
The increase in international visitors that will use Christchurch as a gateway delivers Christchurch and South Island accommodation providers tremendous opportunity for growth. We have some of the best accommodation Christchurch has available at Westside Motor Lodge and we look forward to welcoming new visitors to our quality motel units.
